Jouranalogue Introduces Bias 2

Joranalogue Audio Design BIAS 2 / quick but extensive playthrough / offset, mix, average, scale, ...

video upload by BRiES

"In this video about BIAS 2 by Joranalogue Audio Design I showcase how the module operates and how you can use it for precision mixing, dividing or averaging, offsetting, amplification, scaling, etc. I added 2 pratical use cases to demonstrate BIAS 2s usefulness."

"Voltage control is the basic tenant of modular synthesis: parameters may be modulated by changing control voltages (CVs), simply by plugging in a patch cable. However, during patching it's common to encounter incompatible voltage ranges, with signal outputs and inputs having different amplitudes and sensitivities.

An indispensable utility module, Bias 2 provides a compact yet precise solution to quickly interface signals between modules within a Eurorack modular system, without interrupting your creativity.

Comprising of two independent sections, each with dual inputs and dual outputs, its carefully selected combination of normalised reference voltages and amplification/attenuation factors makes it a breeze to convert between the most common signal ranges: –5 to +5 V, 0 to +5 V and 0 to +10 V.

Precision comes standard on Bias 2, with meticulously engineered analogue signal paths providing absolutely transparent performance for any Eurorack signal: CV, audio or gates/triggers.

Beyond the voltage conversion application, Bias 2 is a true all-rounder, capable of functioning as a pair of dual input unity gain mixers, –6 and +6 dB audio gain stages or a multi-output fixed voltage source."

New Eurorack Modules by Joranalogue Come to SUPERBOOTH

via Joranalogue

We've designed the circuits, made the prototypes, ran the tests... And now, with the entire synth world gathered in Berlin to celebrate Superbooth 2023, it's time to present our latest Eurorack developments!

A routing monster, a slender signal utility, and even some lights thrown into the mix: this year, we've got something for everyone. Read on below to learn more.

Can't wait to try them for yourself? Come find us at booth W435!

Route 4

Flexible Eurorack signal paths under gate or trigger control: that is the basic principle behind Route 4. Consisting of a pair of complementary routing sections, it grants access to a new level of signal routing options.

The module's top section is a 4-to-1 router. Any of the four signal inputs may be selected to be mixed into the section's output, as determined by the control inputs.

Control can either be gate or latch driven—in the latter case, the signal inputs are toggled on and off by received trigger pulses. Meanwhile, the solo/multi switch determines whether the inputs are exclusive, or if multiple may be active at the same time.

On the bottom, the 1-to-4 router provides the same feature set, with a single input being routed to up to four outputs and normalisation between the sections adding some patching convenience.

Analogue Solutions COLOSSUS CLASSIC - (Limited Edition w/ Black Wood Sides)

"This demo unit was featured at Knobcon 2022, now on display here in our showroom. Can be freighted anywhere in the country, please contact us for more info!

Analogue Solutions is excited to introduce Colossus, an exciting new mega-synth with a design ethos truly from the dawn of analogue synths. It is more than a powerful analogue ‘workstation’ - it is also art, architecture, exquisite studio furniture.

Design inspiration is of course from the 1970’s EMS Synthi 100, however, no circuit from the Synthi has been cloned or copied. We prefer to make our own designs. We have chosen some of our favourite circuits from our own large back catalogue synths such as Polymath, Telemark and Vostok.

Colossus is not a Synthi 100 clone - all circuits are non-EMS, Analogue Solutions’ design.

The original Synthi was so large it wouldn’t fit through a standard doorway. We didn’t make that mistake but don’t underestimate it’s size. It will be prominent in your studio, or art gallery!

It is sized at 1585mm wide, 700mm deep and 655mm high and weighing in too big to fit on the scales. It’s not entirely practical, but to be impressive physically and in sound. It will be an awesome centre piece to your studio.

*diagonal dimension is a little less for those with tight door ways - about 620mm effective width.

Also we have found putting Colossus on its end, you can pivot it through narrow doorways (more details in the manual).

All the voice and modulation circuits are of course 100% analogue. We purposely steered away from digital, it doesn’t have MIDI or USB (there are plenty of MIDI converter boxes out there should you need that facility). This wasn’t designed to be the solution to your modern digital studio but rather a serious analogue power house of sound. There are of course digital elements to the sequencer control - that is unavoidable - even classic analogue sequencers like the ARP sequencer using digital logic chips. In fact the Synthi 100 features a digital sequencer.

This synth is purely for those who want it just as it was in the 1970s - but new with parts still in production.

Colossus is large scale, featuring large knobs that control metal shaft potentiometers. VCOs have multi-turn verniers. The two enormous pin matrix panels dominate the horizontal panels - these are incredibly expensive Swiss made broadcast quality signal routers - 1 for CV and 1 for Audio.

There are two spring reverbs, touch keyboards, step sequencers, moving coil meters, joysticks and so much more. An immense expanse of jack sockets for additional patching within or without the system.

There are no gimmicks - this is pure synthesiser. A huge sound enclosed in a solid metal case wrapped in solid hardwood. No expense has been spared to bring this incredible machine to life.

Synthesisers like this only come around once in a decade, or possibly a generation."

New Joranalogue Eurorack Modules for SUPERBOOTH22

via Joranalogue Audio Design

Springtime has arrived, and that can only mean one thing: SUPERBOOTH is upon us!

We've been hard at work in the lab, developing, testing, soldering and listening... Now, it's finally time to present our latest additions to the Eurorack series.

Read on below, and if you're in Berlin, come and meet the new modules in our cosy tent at booth Z430!

Delay 1

Delay 1 is a fully analogue BBD-based delay module with a multitude of features geared towards modern musical use. An integrated temperature-compensated, high-frequency voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) provides the ‘clock’ signal necessary to drive the delay line within 1 to 50 ms.

By increasing the drive frequency to over 20 kHz, the classic ‘BBD clock whine’ problem is solved, while still providing a wide range in delay time. Classic chorus, flanger and echo effects are easily achieved using the dry/wet blend, feedback and damping parameters.

Delay 1 also allows you to experiment with Karplus-Strong synthesis, an exciting technique to create string and percussion type sounds. This is made easy by an integrated noise transient generator, driven by the ‘pluck’ input, and by the clock VCO’s 1 volt per octave response.

PVT2

While the patch programmability of a modular system is its greatest strength, it can also be a weakness: quick experimentation is often hampered by the need to repatch the synthesiser to change the signal flow.

Pivot 2 offers a unique solution: a compact, fully voltage controlled variable signal router. At the turn of a single knob, any signal can be routed through two external modules in series, parallel or reverse series, as well as any combination in between.

Experiment with patching wavefolders before, after or alongside filters, shuffle multiple delay lines, precisely dial in two-stage audio compression or easily control intricate feedback patches.

Looking beyond the basic signal routing application, Pivot 2 will also function as a complementary pair of counter-acting linear voltage controlled amplifiers (VCAs), a voltage controlled crossfader or a voltage controlled panner.

Step 8

What about Step 8? Our sequential tracking/sampling register received a lot of attention at last year's SUPERBOOTH. However, it quickly became clear that the design needed a bit more development time. We've since added some exciting improvements and are planning to commence production soon.

Step 8 represents a new type of modular building block: a sequential tracking/sampling register, which can be configured to provide a variety of functions. These include sequencers, sequential switches, counters, analogue shift registers...

At its heart lies an analogue 1-to-8 signal switch feeding an octet of high-stability track/sample-and-hold stages. Each of these has its own analogue output with an attenuation slider, in addition to a gate output. LEDs visualise the status of each stage in real time. The switch can be controlled sequentially using the built-in 8-step counter, or addressed directly by an analogue control voltage (CV).

For those who are feeling adventurous, there are always more applications to try: configurable voltage mapper, hocketing controller, clock divider, graphic waveshaper, multi-output analogue downsampler...

Morphor AP-1 - Analogue String Synthesis Eurorack Module

video uploads by Morphor

via the Morphor AP-1 Kickstarter

The Morphor AP-1 module is a fully analogue Eurorack module that can produce plucked string sounds. Based on the Karplus-Strong principle, this module is a compact all-in-one solution for generating amazing bass, acoustic guitar and percussion sounds. By using high quality analogue components we made a module with a rich sound. Being only 10HP in width, you won't need a lot of space to get going and start creating some incredible music. Background

I am Thijs, based in Belgium, dipping my toes into developing modules for the first time. After recently graduating as an electronics engineer, I'm currently looking for ways to use my skills and passions to create new things that people love. Thanks to Eli and Matthew from ENT Studios, music lovers who have been just as passionate about this project, this dream is coming to reality. They have over 15 years of experience as electronics engineers and have been supporting me with technical advice, frontplate design and more.

The idea for the Morphor AP-1 module came from personal experience and interests. Being extremely passionate about music, playing bass myself and having some experience with string synthesis in software, the idea to bring this concept to Eurorack in a completely analogue way was obvious from the start. After months of tinkering away I am confident enough in my working prototype to share this exciting project with the world.

The Morphor AP-1 module can produce plucked string sounds with a wide variety of sounds. The module has the following controls:

GATE: to pluck the string, simply insert a 5V pulse into the input. Short triggers work great but you can play around with longer pulses to get rougher sounds.
TUNE: change the frequency of the string with a 1V/oct input. Afterwards you can generate vibrato and other effects with a separate CV pitch input.
COLOUR: you can alter the timbre of the string with this control, including a CV input. This way you can get very noisy or dampened sounds.
FILTER BYPASS: the colour parameter is shaped by an internal filter but can be bypassed if you like. Use your own external filter to generate unique sounds. A one pole low pass filter will give the best results but feel free to get creative with this feature. You can insert anything you like into the loop.
FEEDBACK: by adjusting the feedback amount it's possible to change the decay of the sound. Create short plucked sounds or long ringing strings. In some configurations, you might even get some nice oscillations.
OUTPUT: take the output to the rest of your modular system and start experimenting!
Other information:

Frequency range: sub audio range to roughly 400 Hz
Dimensions: 10HP width, 3U Eurorack standard
3.5mm patch cables for all jacks
16-pin power socket

Pics of the inside below.

"Non humming Eventide H3000S upgraded to all D/SE presets/banks. OS v2.17.
If you`re looking onto this device you know magic of this thing.

However, this device is unusual. Unit is professionally modded.
If you`ve used this device previously you know that crazy annoying hum which produces H3000.
So, this particular device is totally silent, no hum at all. And yes, this puzzled many times many H3000 users, with this also legendary problem of harmonizer.
Hum disappearing is result of modding, with two separate transformers instead of stock single mains transformer, which was unlucky just from start of H3000, causing vibration of top/bottom steel covers.
Other positive aspect of modding except relieving from hum is affecting onto sound performance, so, due to separation (by separate transformers) of digital and analog powering chains sound signature got more else luxury tails, transparency and airing.
In fact, separation of digital and analogue power chains is typical technical solution in many high grade top audio devices, top AD/DA, etc.
At last, input stage upgraded with sweet hi-quality Fairchild NE5532 opamps instead stock TL072 opamp (will be supplied also).

Overall, device in perfect optical shape, LCD, encoder and all buttons working perfectly."

Jackson kindly gave us a glimpse of some of the new features and DSP work thats been going on.
Argon 8 is expected by the end of November at a retail price around £579.
4. SYNTHFEST 2019 - Isotonik Studios Control For Akai Fire - Soon Come
Isotonik Studios spend a lot of their time figuring out what MIDI controllers work well with Ableton Live and construct custom scripts that will allow them to be used in ways that allow for excellent studio and live workflows. In this video we look at the way that new hardware can be hooked up. Using ClipEx Pro and the bindings feature, its possible to create your own complex, custom setups.
Also on show was the soon to be released set of functions including a Euclidian sequencer and control for the Akai Fire. Which is an FL Studio controller that's has been hijacked to work with live with some more clever scripting and a Max4 Live sequencer device.
Available soon via isotonikstudios.com
5. SYNTHFEST 2019 - VCVRack Updates And More To Come
VCV Rack as we know hit its V1.0 earlier this year and as such started to become more highly featured. We caught up with Dale from module developer Valley and talked about the environment, and future plans.

6. SYNTHFEST 2019 - Tranzient - VR Music Creation APP from AliveInTech
We saw some of the VR integration for Ableton Live from AliveInTech's Jim Simons a couple of years back. Since then VR headsets and hardware has reduced in price, making it more available, and so a new application has been developed which has a complete single software solution - with the VR, audio engine all in the same application.
Its called Tranzient and Jim gave us a look at the application in action.
7. SYNTHFEST 2019 - Stylophone Gen R8
The Stylophone Gen R8 is continuing its path to release - in fact its just about to ship.
Its an analogue synth voice with Stylophone heritage - ie it has the touch keypad.
All with in-house Stylophone designed Oscillators, Filter and JFET drive circuit.
8. SYNTHFEST 2019 - EvenHarmonic Stomp Synth
Evenharmonics were showing a proof of concept modular analog synth built into discrete, patchable pedals controlled by guitar.

Meet Colossus - Analogue Solutions Rendition of the Classic EMS SYNTHI 100

You might remember Analogue Solutions EMS SYNTHI 100 for sale from previous posts. It appears they have put it to good use and designed their own version. P.S. I spotted this earlier this morning, but thanks to Soviet Space Child for sending in the link.

via Analogue Solutions:

"Available direct only... Come see Colossus at SynthFest (UK, 5/Oct)

Numbers will be limited - we are currently taking pre-orders, ready to ship in early 2020.

This is truly something special.

Price is £25K. This exclude any tax (most likely you can claim it back through your business). Shipping: Outside of UK it would need to be crated, onto a pallet, then freighted. Shipping and crating likely to be 500-1000GBP. If you aren’t too far from Calais there maybe other options.

WHAT IS COLOSSUS?

HOW TO GENETIC SCISSOR WITH GLUE + DNA! Future Sound Systems // Superbooth 2019

Published on May 24, 2019 DivKidVideo

"Genetics influences oscillators? Analogue synth glue? DNA modulation? The new Recombination Engine from Future Sound Systems is a triple analogue oscillator that flips out the positive and negative portions of waves to impose other oscillators bringing into sync, rectification and tonnes of other 'sonic FX' to the sound. The 3 oscillators working together sounding like analogue vocal synthesis almost like a model of VOSM, super impressive.

There's also the Cyclical Engine we saw last year which has now had a four quadrant multiplier option so you can either AM or Ring Modulate each waveform individually, super sonic sculpting to come with that I'm sure.

FSS are also developing a new high end linear power solution and desk pin matrix devices for studio gear, guitar/pedals and more."

Introducing NanoStudio 2 for the iPad

Published on Dec 4, 2018 BlipInteractive

"Here's a little preview of NanoStudio 2, coming to iPad very soon!

NanoStudio 2 is a powerful music production environment for recording, synthesis, sampling, arranging, editing and mixing. It’s the successor to the original NanoStudio, an app held in high regard by musicians for many years for its usability, quality and productivity.
With six years development behind it, NanoStudio 2 builds upon the same design principles that made its predecessor so popular and then takes a quantum leap with a massive range of extra features and a new audio engine delivering truly professional sound quality. Everything is optimized for CPU efficiency, so complex projects with many instruments and effects are handled with ease.

This is a complete in-the-box solution to production, enabling you to develop your initial musical ideas right through to a final master with an intuitive workflow carefully designed to get things done.

NanoStudio 2 is a fully featured host for external Audio Unit (AUv3) instruments and audio/MIDI effects. A library of all your AU instruments and presets is maintained so they’re in one place – tagged, searchable and just as accessible as NanoStudio’s own internal instruments.
For composing and arranging there are powerful fully featured editors for songs, MIDI parts, automation and samples. All editors share a clean and consistent user interface which means you’ll be up to speed with them in no time.

Squarp Instruments introduces pyraOS 3.0 firmware update for Pyramid Polyrhythmic Sequencer

You can find some videos of the update in previous posts here. The official press release follows.

"PARIS, FRANCE: following five months of beta-testing, avant-garde musical machines developer Squarp Instruments is proud to announce availability of pyraOS 3.0 — a free, major update of the radical realtime processing system firmware for its innovative Pyramid Polyrhythmic Sequencer, an advanced 64-track desktop design with MIDI, MIDI USB, CV/Gate, and (Sync48- and Sync24-configurable) DIN Sync connectivity, creatively adding all the most requested features from its supportive user base alongside innovative ideas from its design team to total over 30 additions — as of September 3…

Polyrhythm is defined as a rhythm which makes use of two or more rhythms simultaneously, so Squarp Instruments’ Pyramid Polyrhythmic Sequencer certainly takes some beating as an advanced 64-track desktop design with MIDI, MIDI USB, CV/Gate, and (Sync48- and Sync24-configurable) DIN Sync connectivity (‘re-released’ last year as a more robust MKII version, thanks to the machined aluminium housing and a sturdy screen protecting its graphical display); different and unusual time signatures can creatively be set to work on each of those tracks to shape shifted-beat sequences, sowing the seeds for freshly-flavoured musical productions. Perfectly designed from the ground up as a modern, easy-to-use, and versatile hardware sequencer, the Pyramid Polyrhythmic Sequencer deftly delivers a radical workflow and almost unlimited possibilities... powerful sequencing, looping, rhythm generation, real-time effect processing, MIDI control, and input+output interfacing are far from beyond the realms of possibility. Put it this way: Pyramid Polyrhythmic Sequencer is perfectly positioned to take centre stage in any musical setup — spanning studio to stage.
